Aug 21, Call me
Yesterday evening I taught our New Members class at 7:00 pm. Before everyone arrived I was returning some phone calls. For some reason I thought of someone I hadn't seen in a while and gave them a call to let them know I had been missing them.
The response literally blew my mind. I am going to try and quote this person verbatim. "I was wondering if you were going to ever call."
"I wasn't coming back until you did."
To say that it ticked me off would be an understatement. My first response, "If Wal-Mart doesn't call do you go back?" If Out back doesn't call, do you go back?" Caught this person a little off guard I think. Their response, "well yeah." As we talked they let me know how grateful they were for the call and assured me they would be there Sunday morning.
Heres the deal, am I glad I called? Of course or I wouldn't have called. Am I glad they'll be there Sunday? Absolutely. I'm overwhelmed anyone would worship with us. But am I heart broken that people would allow a phone call from keeping them away from worshiping the Savior of the universe? Absolutely!
I'm struggling how to write my thoughts. I don't want to offend some people but the truth of the matter is, GROW UP! The Bible speaks very clearly about this type of mindset:
Hebrews 5:12-14
By this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food. [13] Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. [14] But solid food is for the mature, which by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Immature believers are more worried about being missed than making a difference for our Savior. Christ needs warriors, not babies still begging for some more milk. And as the Bible stated, the more we dig into solid food, the better we become at realizing what really matters and what doesn't.
Make sure you hear my heart. Should we call people we haven't seen in a while. YES! I've done it for years and will continue to do so. Do we need to try and help immature believers grow in their faith? Definitely. But we also need to realize that it isn't the churches responsibility (or the preachers) to spoon feed every Christian. As followers of Christ we should have the desire to be at worship, regardless of a phone call. We should have the desire to hang out with God and serve him. And we should grow in our faith and not remain a child for years.
Continue to encourage people. Continue to call people. Continue to invite your friends and family. But, continue (or for many begin) to grow in your walk with Christ. Don't let little things keep you from enjoying all Christ has in store for you.
Do something radical for the King today!
