February, 10, Bad Dad
Jacob (my 10 year old) wanted to go to a class mates birthday party yesterday afternoon. It was being held at the Easley skating ring and
started at 5:00. Since I needed to get to the church early anyway I volunteered to drop him off. We arrived at 5:00 pm on the nose and found no one there but the owners of the skating ring. We went on in to see if we had arrived at the wrong time. According to the owner
the party wasn't until 5:30. Just by coincidence the owner actually comes to 5 Point. Told me to leave Jacob with him until the party started.
I figured Jacob had just gotten confused on the time. Deb picked him up at 6:30 only to find out that there was a party but it wasn't for Jacob's class mate. Jacob didn't let us know the skating ring was in Piedmont. He figured it had to be Easley. To say Momma was upset
is being nice. I had left her baby at a party for a child that Jacob didn't even know.
Here is the funny part. Jacob knew I had my cell phone and he knows the number. So I asked him why he didn't call me. He could skate with a bunch of other kids, eat free pizza and cake or come and sit at the church. He had a blast. Said he was a little embarrassed but
that wore off real quick.
When we got home and Deb started fussing about how I left her baby, I was quick to remind her that I was the one willing to take him while she took a nap. I was the one who made sure he was in a safe place with people I knew. And I was the one who had created a son who could fit right in with a group of people he had no idea who they were and party with them.
I was going to try and make some spiritual analogy but the truth of the matter is, I left my kid at the wrong party. I did learn one thing from
this, always read the invitation yourself and don't take the ten years old advice.
Couple of thoughts:
* Had a great meeting last night with 20 potential leaders. Love to see people getting excited about serving the church.
* I'm having lunch today with Joe Sangle from New Spring. Want to bring him back to 5 Point for a community event.
He'll be doing a free one day seminar on how to get out of debt then speak on Sunday morning. More after the meeting.
* Great staff meeting yesterday. Praying and planning to take 5 Point to a whole new level.
* My passion and desire to reach this city intensifies every day.
* Awesome time with coaches and teachers this morning. Group continues to grow.
* Getting ready to walk out the door and head to the High School. A young man I've been praying and working with is on the verge of
accepting Jesus as King. Yeah baby! Hopefully by 10:00 another child of God will be born.
