February 3, Pouring into others

I graduated from Clemson University in December of 1986.  I was fortunate to find a teaching job in the middle of a school year.  Deb, Michelle and myself all headed for Horry County to live in a small farming community called Green Sea Floyds.  I taught public school for 9 years in this community and loved it.  I've always loved teen-agers and loved teaching them.  I guess that's the reason I think so highly of teachers and coaches today.  They are literally shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.

Early on Tuesday mornings I meet with (grown to 7) male teachers and coaches.  Why?  Because I believe they are making an impact.  Were working our way through Exodus and drawing out leadership principles from Moses who happens to be the best leader in scripture besides Christ himself.

This morning we read Exodus 33:7-11.  If you'd like to take the time here is that scripture:

Exodus 33:7-11
Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the "tent of meeting." Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. [8] And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. [9] As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. [10] Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to his tent. [11] The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

We discussed that for any of us to become the man or woman God desires us to be we must:
1. Separate ourself from the world and spend time with God.  As a leader, this sets the example for our family and those
we lead.  In verse 7 Moses set the example for the Israelites.
2. Understand that others are always watching.  If we make watching Sports Center more important than hanging out with God,
our kids are watching.  People are watching us every day if we like it or not.
3. Learn to listen and obey God's voice.  The only way to learn when God is speaking is to recognize his voice and not others.
This comes through spending time with God.  Moses knew God's voice well because of the time spent with God.
4. A pillar of cloud would cover the tent when Moses was inside with God.  We've got to come to a point in our walk with Jesus that
others know we've been hanging out with the King.
5. Always take others with us.  Anytime Moses does something significant, Joshua is right there with him.  Moses was preparing
Joshua to take his spot one day.

I look forward to our early Tuesday mornings because I happen to believe it is making a difference n the lives of these men which
in return will make a difference in the lives of others.

Think about who you can pour your life into.  Who is your Joshua?  Your children, co-workers, friends?  People are hungry for the truth.  The most important ministry any of us have is our family and this is a great place to start.
