July 10, Fishing
Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to experience something I've never done, deep sea fishing. I bought the most powerful drugs I could (legal drugs) and began taking them early that morning and again before getting on the boat. The ride out of the inlet into the ocean was awesome. The seas were calm and the ride was beautiful. We went 12 miles out. That was a lot of water between me and land, but I loved every minute of it.
We began fishing over some reef and it didn't take long for us to begin catching fish. Curtis caught a long (3 feet worth of long) catfish looking fish. The captain didn't even know what it was. Wasn't but a few minutes later Andrew caught a shark. Didn't have the shark off the hook and Kevin caught an octopus. Thats right, octopus. When he pulled it out of the water the thing was squirting water everywhere at us. I was enjoying being so close to a creature I'd never seen until he swung the thing into my lap. All I could think about was the first alien movie where the octopus creature latched onto the guys face. I ain't lying, I was squealing like a little girl and threatening Kevin for his life. Arms were flying everywhere, mine and the octopuses.
Andrew caught another shark and Kevin a sea bass. Have you noticed anything in this documentary? Big Dean ain't had a bite. I thought I might have felt a tug early in the day but that could have been hopeful thinking. We moved locations and I still ain't had a bite. Finally, hours into the morning I felt a tug. I anxiously waited to hook my trophy and reel in the biggest fish of the day. As I felt the fish biting on my shrimp I set the hook. It wasn't until I brought my fish in that I realized I actually caught one. It was a THREE INCH sea bass. I kid you not. I hooked the thing and threw it back out as bait. That was it, not another bite.
I left the marina jacked up about catching some fish and returned with nothing but my supposedly good friends (one being my son) dogging me about the monster I reeled in.
My experience deep sea fishing reminded me of the words Christ himself spoke about fishing:
Matthew 4:19
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
It is the responsibility of every believer to try and catch fish (non-believers). Notice I didn't say catch, I said try. I tried to catch some fish in the ocean, just didn't happen. I often share the gospel and people refuse to accept Christ. I read on Perry Nobles blog (pastor of New Spring in Anderson, SC) that 50,000 people a day die through out the world that do not know Jesus. That floored me and broke my heart at the same time.
Keep trying, keep fishing. I'm going fishing tonight with Andrew and some other friends and there is a good possibility I won't catch a thing, but I refuse to quit because there are those times we do catch fish and its awesome. But even more awesome is fishing for men and seeing lives changed.
This Sunday we'll see some of the fish we've caught here at 5 Point. Baptizing close to 20 people. That is awesome, but we should be baptizing this many on a weekly basis. FISH and FISH hard, peoples lives are at stake!
