May 6, Dentist
I made a trip to the dentist yesterday morning because I had the worst tooth ache I've had in years while in Orlando. Probably gonna have a root canal in very near future. While being checked out I asked to get my teeth cleaned because it had been two years. Soon as she started picking and squirting I realized why it had been two years. My dental hygienist gave me the lecture that it wouldn't be so bad if I'd come on a regular six month basis.
She also scolded me about flossing. TOld me SEVERAL times if I would do what I'm supposed to it wouldn't hurt so bad while she was trying to correct the dark spots on my teeth.
Can't help it, (guess it's the communicator in me) I started thinking to myself, that is exactly what I tell our people all the time about their life. If we would just hang out in God's Word and do what He tells us instead of what the world tells us life would be so much easier. But just like me and my teeth, we think we got it under control or were too busy and then when we have a pain in life we come running asking for help.
So many times the pain is our own fault, otherwise known as consequences of sin. When this happens in life God the Father often steps in and disciplines his children. The Bible puts it this way:
Hebrews 12:6-11
[6] because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."[7] Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? [8] If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. [9] Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! [10] Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. [11] No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Just as the hygienist hurt, the pain was actually good for me. Same is true in life. But, I've learned my lesson. Already made my six month appointment and plan on flossing a lot more.
