April 18, Pimp My Life

PIMP MY LIFE, this is the name of our new series starting Sunday after next. What does pimp mean? According to Webster - A man who solicits clients for a prostitute.
When I hear the word pimp that is not exactly what comes to mind. Our goal as a church is not to teach men how to solicit clients for prostitutes. Then why a series called Pimp My Life?
There is a very popular TV show entitled Pimp My Ride on MTV. The show takes a beat up, ugly, ragged, good for nothing car and makes it into an incredible showcase of a car. A car any man would be proud to drive (according to personal opinion). The show has nothing to do with sexual content. At least not the couple of times I've watched it.
I had a interesting phone conversation this morning. Someone called asking why we were using the name PIMP in the series title. Wanted me to know it could offend some people. To be honest, I hadn't thought of it in that way. My definition of the word didn't match with this individuals definition. But truth of the matter is that there are a lot of words with several meanings.
Take the word desert for example. According to Webster there are numerous definitions:
1. dry barren often sand covered area of land
2. uninhabited
3. barren and uncultivated
4. to abandon or leave without intending to return
5. to leave service in armed forces without permission
Same word, yet five completely different meanings. Words are not evil, its how we interpret words that makes them evil. The reason behind this series is the same meaning behind the show Pimp My Ride. We want to take something old, rugged, beat up and turn it into something brand new. We may not have a bunch of mechanics and body shop guys but we do have Jesus Christ and he can take anything old and make it new.
Topics discussed in this series are marriage, mouth, our bodies, spiritual growth and our relationship with others.
I don't know many people, church goers or not, that don't need to improve in these areas. So before anyone takes the word PIMP in the wrong way or is offended about it, realize not everything is always directed at you.
