April 16, Running for your life

I'm making my way through the Bible and this morning I read a very familiar story.  It is the story of King Saul chasing David and trying to kill him for doing exactly what he had asked him to do.  This takes us back to the story of David & Goliath.  Everyone was scared of this mammoth Philistine except for this cocky teenage boy.  King Saul asked David to kill the giant and he did.  He then became Saul's right hand man in battles.  But the more successful David became the more jealous Saul became.  To the point he wanted David dead.

1 Samuel 24:1-2
After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the Desert of En Gedi." [2] So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.

David was running for his life and had done exactly what he had been asked to do.  You ever felt like David?  Felt like you were doing exactly what God had asked, yet things weren't going well.  In fact, life stinks and your doing everything you can just to keep your head above water.

I wasn't in the cave with David, but let me show you how David handled the situation.  He had the chance to kill Saul while Saul was going to the bathroom.

1 Samuel 24:3-4
He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. [4] The men said, "This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, 'I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.' " Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

David could have easily killed Saul but refused to.  Instead, he chose to obey God and spared Saul's life.  After Saul had gone back down the hill David came out and spoke to Saul.  Look at Saul's response,

1 Samuel 24:16-19
When David finished saying this, Saul asked, "Is that your voice, David my son?" And he wept aloud. [17] "You are more righteous than I," he said. "You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. [18] You have just now told me of the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. [19] When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today.

I know I've felt like David before, not understanding what was going on but there have been times I didn't act as Godly.  If I had been David I very well may have cut Saul's throat (just being honest).  Then I would have missed all the blessings God had in store for me.  Sure, I would have been justified, but that doesn't make it right.

If you feel like the world is crushing down on you, don't respond by acting like the rest of the world.  Trust God and act like a child of God.  The times I have actually tried it God's way and not mine turned out a lot better.  Amazing isn't it?  Sometimes we have to face the Saul's in our life to receive the blessings God has in store for us.
