March 25, Leadership 1- Leading family

This handsome young man is my 19 year old son Andrew Dean Herman. I can't believe my boy is already 19 and a sophomore in college. Good night I'm getting old. The picture was taken at the ACC Championship game a couple of weeks ago. He is sitting in his seat, just a few rows from the court. I've never been to a ACC tournament game much less the championship game.
As I think about my boy (now a young man) I often wonder about the example I've set before him. Have I been the Godly example I needed to be? Has he seen Jesus in me? Not on the stage but in everyday life? I really thought about this during my devotion yesterday morning. I'm making my way through the chronological Bible and I'm in Joshua right now.
In Joshua 7 we find the story of a man effecting his entire family with his sin. (Read all of Joshua 7 to get the reality of this powerful story) God has given Israel total victory over Jericho, but they we're told not to take any of the plunder. A man by the name of Achan took some silver & gold anyway and God called him out on it. Read what happened to Achan and his family.
Joshua 7:24-25
Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold wedge, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. [25] Joshua said, "Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today." Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.
Achan brought death upon his entire family because of his sin. So many times leaders don't see the effect they have on those around them, and at times those closest to them. God has allowed me to hang out with some awesome leaders. Perry Noble, Gray Lamb, Sam Davis, Kevin Childs and many others. These guys are known for their leadership skills. But, everyday guys like myself aren't known by others but only by those God has placed around us.
But I believe the example we set is just as important; especially for our family. Dads, 5 Point leaders, what kind of example are yo setting for your family and co workers? Achan thought he could get away with stealing just a little of the plunder. What we so often forget while trying to impress man is that God is always watching.
I want to lead this church to a whole new level. But, even more importantly I want to lead my family to the center of God's perfect and Holy will. I can't imagine dragging my family through my sin. Thank you Jesus for taking my sin on your shoulders. I never want my faults to fall on those closest to me.
No matter how many people you effect with your leadership, always remember the most important ONE is always watching.
