Deb's thoughts on debt
Dean & I have come a long way as far as our finances are concerned. Unfortunately, we both like to spend “fun money”. I like to shop and Dean likes to fish. (right now that is his big thing) I like to shop for me, family, house, well etc…. I think I could shop 3 out of 4 weekends but time doesn’t allow me, have to clean sometime and not to mention “my pocketbook” doesn’t either.
Before Dean graduated from Clemson, his junior year, we began receiving credit cards by the groves in the mail. They use to send you the actual card in the mail, now they do at least make you fill out some papers to send back to them. We received Belk, Sears, JC Penney’s, Gulf, Amoco, and last but not least MASTERCARD!!!! Sure enough it didn’t take us long to max THOSE babies out!!! Within the year, before he graduated in fact. What they didn’t send with the “good news” that we had been pre-approved was the “bad news” and “warnings” that come along with owning the cards. High finance charges, stress of just making the payment not to mention paying it off and being forever in debt to these people, the battles of “heavily discussing” our finances. ( It causes stress on a marriage and family.) Although, it wasn’t worth pointing fingers at the other one it was both our faults. It took years to get them paid off and many struggles financially in between. It was a domino effect one debt lead to another.
I always say that Dean and I learn things the hard way…we speak from experience when we tell our children “Do not get credit cards”.
The freedom that we have of not having credit card debt hanging over our heads is indescribable.
Even more fun going shopping now!!
WATCH OUT DEAN!!!
