February 26, Guest - Debbie Herman
Since I've been in church my entire life I been around a lot of pastors wives. I can truly say Debbie is one of if not the best Pastors wife I've ever met. If you know Dean Herman, then you know the added pressures on Debbie.
I asked Deb to write a blog with some of her thoughts. Here it is:
When Dean asked me a couple of weeks ago to write on his blog I asked “ what on earth would I write about”!?!?!?? So when Ann wrote on his blog I had no choice but to do the same. The pressure was on. (Thanks Ann)
I tell everyone that I am going to write a book on my life being married to Dean. I then laugh and think no one would buy it but my Mom and she probably wouldn’t appreciate the humor in it. When something new happens in our life I preface it with “this will be a new chapter in my book”. With having 30 years together and 28 of them being in marriage the book is too full, way too many chapters and big books sometimes scare people away. I don’t think there is any way of shortening any of it.
I am very proud to say that I feel privileged to have been called to be a pastor’s wife. I do feel like it is a calling. I can honestly say the last few years have probably been the happiest I have been with being in the ministry. 5 Point has truly been a blessing . People love us but more importantly they love Jesus and others and it shows. The ministry life is sometimes lonely. I have learned that the hard way in so many cases, I can’t always have a very best friend (which “girls’ need). I have been hurt by people that I thought would never leave my side. So with that I put up walls to protect me and my family. I am slowly but surely starting to break down some of those walls.
Dean is a wonderful man of God, and I really mean it when I say “what you see on Sunday mornings and out in town is the same man in our home.” He has been a great husband and great Dad. (Like most people, he sometimes has his moments, he is human) He loves us no doubt and what a great gift to his children to see that he loves their mother and to his wife that he loves their children. I do believe that he would lay down and die for any of us at any given time.
We have been together for a long time, we grew up together, I mean that literally. (Although, I am still trying to raise him) We were married at 18 (way too young) but I know now that God had us in His hands, He had a plan for us even before we were one of His. He surrounded us with great friends once we moved away and that I will be forever grateful. We grew in Him, through Him and with Him.
I hope I can make 5 Pointers proud to say that is our pastor’s wife. We, the Herman’s are in no way perfect (far from it) but we do love the Lord, love each other, and love 5 Point!!!
Love ya bunches,
Debbie
