February 21, Church growth conference

What a week!  Out of town Monday and Tuesday.  Playing catch up for this weekend services.  By the way, I truly believe God is going to do something special this Sunday.  Can't wait!  Sick wife and son.  I haven't written much lately.  I have a computer at home finally and the inter net will be hooked up next week.  I'll be able to write more often once I'm able at home.

For today I want to share some thoughts about the conference the staff & elders attended Monday and Tuesday.  Some of my favorite pastors spoke during the main sessions.  Mark Batterson, Steven Furdick, Shauwn Lovejoy and Bil Corneilus.  What a line up.  God is using all of these men in a great way.  All of us attended break out sessions also.  The two I attended hit me square in the eyes.  Bil Corneilus taught on the subject of how to speak to the disconnected.

On the way home I asked everyone to share one gold nugget that God had given them.  It was great hearing how all of us walked away with a different nugget.  Here are the nuggets I took away:

* The spiritual, emotional and physical health of the pastor is a direct reflection of the church.
* Pastors must lead the way with a disciplined life style.
* I can't do everything I'm doing and be as effective on Sundays as I need to be.  Must concentrate more on
   Sunday's message.
* We need more staff.  General rule is 1 staff member per 100 people.  We average well over 400 per week and
only have two full time staff members.  We're working on this.
* I can not compare myself to any other pastors.  I must be who God called me to be.  Scary thought!
* I can never become so busy I don't spend a great deal of time with God.
* I must be secure in the vision God has laid on my heart for 5 point.  If not, others will try and steal it.
* To attract and attain people Sunday mornings have to reach another level of excellence.
* Great churches aren't always built in a two - three year span.  Great things have happened at 5 Point and will
   continue to do so.
* We have to advertise more.  A lot of churches spend 10% of budget on advertisement.  We still have people in
the community that think were a theater.
* I must share our vision and direction more.  Our people need to know.

Monday night all of us spent a couple hours discussing our next full time staff hire.  I've really been thinking and praying through this.  Hire slow because each staff plays a huge role in helping our church grow.

Debbie and Jacob are both still at home sick.  Gotta get home and play some more Mr. Mom.  Deb deserves the break.  She does an awesome job of taking care of us.
