February 12, God's flock

Today has been one of those days where I spent an unordinary amount of time with God.  It all started at 5:30 am as I headed to the gym.  Got Jacob to school and started hanging out with God a little after 8:00.  Began by reading my Bible.  Not sure why but just continued reading.  After wards I got on my face and prayed about a bunch of stuff.  I have a meeting in Anderson tomorrow and knew I wouldn't be able to prepare Wednesday night so I began studying for Wednesday.  This is where God really spoke to me this morning.  I read the following verse as I prepared.

1 Peter 5:2
Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

I'm not lying, it was if Simon Peter was sitting on the couch in my office explaining my role to our people.  "Dean, shepherd your people, watch over them and feed them."  I wondered how Peter felt when Christ reinstated him after denying Christ three times.  This incredible story can be found in John 21 and Christ gave Peter very specific instructions:
1.  "Feed my lambs"
2.  "Take care of my sheep"
3.  "Feed my sheep"

Peter is relaying the same message to me and other pastors.  "Feed my people."  I am so grateful for the honor and privilege of teaching God's Word weekly.  Because of this responsibility I've tried to cut back on the administration aspects of the church.  Leave these more to Tim and Ann.  I want to spend the majority of my time hanging out with God and preparing Christ-centered, creative messages that will make an impact on the lives of people.  Gotta get back to Sunday morning.

Pray for me, I'll begin painting our bonus room tonight and I hate painting.
