January 23, Good to Great

I'm reading Good to Great by Jim Collins and it is rocking my world.  What an awesome book for anyone in a leadership position.  Today, I want to share some of my thoughts on Good to Great.

The purpose of the book is to show what it takes to move a company from being good to great.
Definition of good - Generally kept pace with the stock market in terms of shareowner return.
Definition of great - A company that has outperformed the general market over a sustained period of time.
Jim and his team took five years to interview hundreds of companies.  Applying very specific criteria Jim narrowed the list down to eleven companies.  It's important to note that the 11 companies are not a sample but a complete list of companies that meet the definition of "Good to Great."

The first characteristic of a Great company is what Jim called Level 5 leadership.  All eleven good to great companies had Level 5 leadership and all good companies had the absence of level 5 leaders.  In a very short equation, level 5 leaders are HUMILITY + WILL = LEVEL 5 LEADER

After reading this chapter the question haunting me was am I a good leader or a level 5 leader?  Do I have the humility and will to take 5 Point, a good church to being a great church?  Before anyone goes all spiritual on me, I understand this is God's church.  I understand that God blesses and its not all in Dean's hands.  But, if its all dependent upon God why is the average Baptist church in America running 78?  Doesn't God want His church to be about reaching people and lives being changed? The obvious answer, YES!  Then why are there more churches closing their doors than in any other time?  In my opinion, because the majority of churches have less than good leadership.

Everything rises and falls on leadership and this includes the church.  Don't take my opinion, study churches that God is truly blessing.  There is always incredible leadership in place.  Perry Noble & Gary Lamb are awesome speakers, but they're even better leaders.

Back to my original question, am I a level 5 leader?  And if not, do I have what it takes to make the changes?  Please pray with me as I evaluate the good things happening at 5 Point and seek God's will to lead us into being the great church that He so desires.
