September 12 - What do you think about
My heart's desire from day one of this blog has been to help people know and understand their pastor. Who is Dean Herman and what is Dean Herman about? Let me be real transparent and honest with you today. One of the toughest areas of my life to clean up has been my mind. What I think about.
Think with me. What do you think about on a daily basis? Is it stuff that is pleasing to Christ? Or is it more on the side of pleasing self? I know for me it has usually been for pleasing no one but Dean Herman. For example, if someone is going slow in the left lane (the lane for people who want to go fast) its as if horns begin to sprout. I wish I had a snow plow attached to my truck so I could push them into the ditch. Just being honest. I know, that is so rude and contrary to scripture.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
WOW! Paul pretty much brings that home doesn't he? And the reason we're supposed to keep our mind on pure things is because a lot of the time sin starts in the mind. We think about it before we act upon it. So if we can clean up our minds, it'll make life a lot easier.
Some helpful hints that has helped me in this area of my life. First, when these sinful thoughts appear in your mind, immediately think about something else. Such as, when someone is going slow, I like to think God is protecting me from a ticket or wreck. That may sound silly, but I just turned a sinful thought into praising God.
Second, when your looking at something that causes sinful thoughts (opposite sex with little on and a lot showing) turn your head. Its amazing how when we don't look we don't think about it. Out of sight, out of mind.
Third, if it is a true problem in your life Satan knows it. That is why he continues to place whatever IT is in your mind. I say out loud, "Satan, I refuse to listen to you and replace those thoughts with Godly thoughts.
You may think this sounds stupid, but it has helped me greatly. I'm trying to put pure and noble thoughts in my head and not sinful.
